Nestled in the vibrant culinary heart of George Town, Keat Hoe Coffee Shop is a treasure trove for lovers of authentic Penang cuisine, particularly celebrated for its stellar coffee and iconic local hawker fare. Operating for nearly four decades, this beloved coffee shop offers a genuine taste of Penang’s rich food heritage, where every dish tells a story of tradition and dedication.
The star attractions here are undoubtedly the Char Kway Teow (CKT) and Hokkien Mee. Customers consistently rave about the CKT’s perfectly wok-fried noodles, infused with a smoky, savory depth that only expert skill can achieve, crowned with fresh and juicy prawns that burst with flavor in every bite. The Hokkien Mee, a cherished Penang staple, is offered at an unbeatable price of only RM6, featuring a rich, aromatic broth teeming with intense seafood umami and tender noodles, making it one of the best breakfasts in town. Fans of these dishes praise the nostalgic, old-school flavors that whisk you back to the days of timeless street food mastery.
Beyond the savory, the sweet offerings here are just as compelling. The Claypot Apom Manis, a traditional coconut milk crepe cooked over charcoal, delivers a perfectly balanced sweet finish—crispy on the outside and soft with a fragrant hint of coconut inside. It’s a must-try that both locals and visitors adore. For those seeking simple yet indulgent bites, the You Tiao (fried dough) is so delicious that visitors often find themselves coming back for a second round.
Keat Hoe Coffee Shop’s atmosphere resonates with the authentic charm of a bustling Penang hawker market, where the vibrant sounds and enticing aromas create a sensory feast even before the first bite. This unpretentious but deeply satisfying setting amplifies the joy of savoring each dish. While some visitors have noted service could improve, the food truly shines as the undeniable highlight here.
Customers’ enthusiasm speaks volumes: “One of the best char kuey teow I’ve had in a long time," shares Hanson Phoon, while G Nemo declares it “a truly satisfying meal” that deserves repeat visits. Starry Koh’s visit confirms the coffee shop’s top-tier status as a recent winner of the Penang Fried Kway Teow Championship in 2025, underscoring the establishment’s commitment to culinary excellence.
For those planning a morning visit, timing is key—be sure to arrive early, as popular items like the Hokkien Mee often sell out quickly, usually around 9 a.m. Parking can be challenging due to its prime location on Jalan Burma, but the sensory rewards of dining here make it worth the effort.
In summary, Keat Hoe Coffee Shop is more than just a place to grab breakfast—it’s a living culinary institution where the flavors of Penang’s street food heritage are passionately preserved and expertly executed. Whether you are a first-timer or a seasoned local, each visit promises a warm, hearty experience filled with bold tastes and cherished recipes that keep drawing food lovers back to this charming George Town gem.

A fantastic coffee shop find! We tried the delicious CKT (Char Kway Teow) and Hokkien Mee here – both were absolutely on point. Don't miss the Claypot Apom Manis for a perfect sweet finish. The coffee is also nice and robust. A truly satisfying meal! Will definitely be back.

Free of today, I searched for the Penang Fried Kway Teow Championship on Google and then came here to try it. Taste was amazing, wok saute until aromatic and flavour brings savory. The main is the prawn was absolutely fresh and juicy. Rate: 9/10. Coffee shop service was poor, not coming to ask for drinks, need to improve of that. Hard to find carpark and roadside parking.

One of the best char kuey teow I’ve had in a long time. The flavour is rich, smoky, and full of that old-school taste you don’t find often anymore. You can really taste the skill and heart put into every plate. Definitely worth coming back for!

One of my favourite place for breakfast. Operate almost 40 years. The hokkien mee is one of the best in Penang and the price u can’t find in Penang only rm6. I been eating the Hokkien mee for almost 30 years. Remember come early. After 9am mostly finish. And also the spin is very good and got Michelin 1 star.

So before you go, and I could be wrong, both this is more of a hawkers market than an actual coffee shop. There are a variety of little stalls that specialize in 1 or 2 things. Unfortunately they are all amazing!!! Got the hainese chicken rice but also with some of the bbq pork and crispy skin. It was amazing. The rice is rich and juicy. Chicken very flavourful and moist. Pork was crunchy and savory. Next up was the stir fried rice noodles (forgot the name). Ended up eating 2 versions: original and salted duck egg. The duck egg was delicious, very rich and texture on point. I do still recommend the original though as it’s amazing and very different experience. For drinks they come around, I got the Milo coffee and I’d say go with yeah. Not too sweet, hits great in the morning and you can always do another! Also the siu mi and glutinous rice are highly recommend.

This amazing spot is perfect for an authentic local breakfast. You'll quickly see why Penang is called a 'food paradise' here. The You Tiao is so delicious we came back the next day just for it. The Claypot Appom Manis—traditional coconut milk crepes cooked over charcoal—is also a must-try
